  1. The Motels debut album was a definite post-punk production. They had perfected their sound at Madam Wong's in L.A. for over a year, and the studio recording don't differ much at all from how they sounded live. Listening to the album, it is easy to see why it didn't do well on the pop charts in the U.S. American radio was still into heavy metal on one hand, and disco on the other. New Wave hadn't broken into the market until MTV came around in '81, so groups like the Motels didn't get the exposure they should have gotten on the radio. But they were a smash sensation in Australia and Europe, and "Total Control" became their anthem until "Only the Lonely" would take America by storm in '82.
